In a major play for fan engagement, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is set to launch its very own nonfungible token (NFT) collection in anticipation of the 2023 Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Partnering with blockchain firm Modex, FIFA’s announcement on December 11 revealed plans for an initial collection of 100 NFTs premiering on December 15. Notably, these NFTs present an exclusive opportunity for fans to secure tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
The NFT rollout doesn’t end there, with an additional 900 digital collectibles set to hit the Polygon network and OpenSea this month. This extended collection will showcase memorable moments from the ongoing tournament and digital renditions of cherished memorabilia. Fans can delve into the action and relive their favorite football memories in a unique digital format.
As the FIFA Club World Cup unfolds in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, starting December 12, fans will have the chance to grab a piece of history through FIFA’s dedicated platform, FIFA+ Collect. This NFT platform, powered by Algorand and launched in September 2022, has been instrumental in expanding the fan experience.
Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex, expressed excitement, stating, “Digital collectibles increase how fans can interact with their favorite players, teams, and the game they love, and we’re honored to support FIFA in realizing this goal.”
The FIFA+ Collect platform boasts an impressive track record, facilitating 11 NFT drops since its inception. With a staggering 909,255 digital collectibles minted and 16,448 holders, the platform has witnessed a total trading volume of $2.4 million across primary and secondary NFT markets. However, it’s important to note that “Mint Volume can be misleading as FIFA+ Collect Info cannot distinguish the packs obtained for free in challenges from the packs purchased with USDC,” according to FIFA+ Collect Info.
